Fantastic news from the Global Campaign for Education Week of Action! Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for International Development has announced Britain’s contribution of £12 million to the Fast-Track Initiative which will help developing countries provide education for the world’s poorest children. Together, we’ve helped make a real difference to their lives and futures.
Mr Benn made his announcement during the Week of Action when 462 MP’s visited schools. Young people asked their MPs how they would help more than 100 million children worldwide with no access to education. While in the US, Hillary Clinton launched a bill to increase education aid to $2.5bn per year by 2009. We say, keep up the good work! The EU’s sugar policy is in urgent need of reform. It pays big businesses hidden subsidies to dump sugar on the world market, ruining the livelihoods of farmers in poor countries - and costing taxpayers billions. Tell EU Agricultural Commissioner Franz Fischler, to stop dragging his feet and reform sugar policies today. Click the link below now to help the developing world get a fairer deal.
In 2003 there were 840,000 AIDS orphans in Malawi, growing at a rate of 70,000 a year. In many families, a generation has been lost, leaving elder children supporting younger brothers and sisters, and grandparents responsible for their grandchildren. With your support Oxfam has trained volunteers to give these families much-needed support in their own homes. Click below to read first-hand accounts of their stories and view a video about Oxfam’s AIDS work.
